DOUBLE DAR
One of Grace Phillips Johnsons’ (Grandma Grace) favorite activities was her participation in the Daughters of the American Revolution. Her membership was based on the fact that her ancestors could be traced back on the Phillips line to Captain John Phillips who served as a Captain in the Hunterdon County militia between 1775 and 1778 and was a guide to George Washington in the battle of Trenton.
What was not realized until recently was that David Hays, an ancestor in the Johnson line, is documented in the Official Register of the Officers and Men of New Jersey in the Revolutionary War.
This means that the female descendents from the marriage of Charles H. Johnson and Clarinda Grace Phillips (Grandma Grace) can prove their right to membership in the DAR based on a dual capacity.
It should be noted that while this monograph is directed to the female side of the family there is a parallel organization known as SAR (Sons of the American Revolution). Its’ purpose is also to recognize and honor our forbearers contribution to American society. The most recent member of the family to have gained this recognition is Laura Thompson. She has assured me that she will coach interested family members through the process.
